The Roanoke
Valley Detention Commission is a public body corporate created and
organized under the laws of the Commonwealth
of Virginia. The Counties
of Botetourt, Franklin and Roanoke and the Cities of Roanoke
and Salem provided for the establishment of the Commission
pursuant to §16.1-315,
code of Virginia (1950), as amended.
The purpose
of the Commission is to own, operate, and manage a juvenile detention
facility. The Commission is governed by a six member board, with each
member jurisdiction appointing one member except the City of Roanoke,
which appoints two members.
As of June 2001, the capacity of the facility has increased to a total
of 81 beds.
